The Board of Supervisors will hear a presentation from a redevelopment consultant on the proposed Oildale Redevelopment Agency. This type of proposal deserves much scrutiny as these taxpayer subsidized projects distort the free market and can depress an already over-supplied real estate market.

Please note some current taxpayer subsidized projects such as: Parkview Cottages at 21st & R Streets, a boondoggle costing the taxpayers $4 million in the hole so far; and the new $30 million dollar taxpayer subsidized real estate project known as Baker Street Village in Old Town Kern.

Facts:

  • Redevelopment agencies consume 10% of all property taxes in California
  • They are supported by lawyers, consultants, bond brokers, & out of area developers
  • Created without a vote of the citizens
  • Incur bonded indebtedness without voter approval
  • Can use eminent domain to benefit private interests
  • Diverts tax increases from public works and schools to the redevelopment agency, thus creating a new permanent layer of unaccountable government
